What you need to know about coal and the Monroe Power Plant

The Monroe Power Plant is a coal-fired power plant located in Monroe, Michigan that is owned by dirty energy utility DTE Energy. This plant is responsible for 280 deaths, 440 heart attacks, and 4400 asthma attacks as a result of the pollution it spews out, as well as tens of thousands of cases of other respiratory illnesses each year. Ranked 5th in terms of coal waste pollution.
 

In the 2012 National Resources Defence Council’s report, Monroe power plant was rated the second worst power plant in the Great Lakes region in regards to mercury emissions. Mercury is incredibly harmful to people, especially young people and babies.
